Heritage Hill Historic District

Heritage Hill Historic District Heritage Hill is considered Grand Rapids’ first residential neighborhood and was named the city’s first Historic District in 1973. Heritage Hill’s boundaries are defined by Crescent St to the north, Union St to the East, Pleasant St to the South and Lafayette St to the west.

Heritage Hill contains over 1300 homes that represent over 60 architectural styles including classical revival and Victorian. These homes date back to 1848 and were the homes of the people that shaped the city’s future like Teachers, Judges, Legislators and Lumber Barons.

The Heritage Hill Historical District is adjacent to Downtown Grand Rapids. The Heritage Hill Association was formed in 1968. The association’s purpose is to build and preserve this historic community and keep it a safe and stable environment for its residents.

Historic Homes of Heritage Hill

Among the various Historic Homes, two of the more famous are the Voight House and the Meyer May Home. The Voight House is located at 115 College Ave SE and was built in 1895 by a local businessman named Carl Voigt. The Voight house is an adaptation of a French Chateau and Meyer May Home Heritage Hillwas home to 2 generations of the Voight family. It is now a property of the Public Museum and open to the public. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children, seniors and students.

The Meyer May Home, designed in 1908 by famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, is located at 450 Madison SE. This fabulous home is a classic example Wright’s “Prairie” style of architecture. It was restored by Steelcase in and made available to the public in 1987. It is open to the public and admission is free. The fully restored house is furnished with arts and crafts from that period, original pieces and reproductions of original pieces.

Grand Rapids Parks

Heritage Hill Grand Rapids Dog Park is the city’s only dog park and is located at Hillcrest Park at the corner of Lyon and Benjamin. Rosa Parks Circle is located in downtown Grand Rapids and is a popular spot during the summer and winter months. The park’s center features a sculptural amphitheatre that is used during the summer for festivals and concerts. In the winter months it is used as a skating rink.

Grand Rapids Medical Mile

The Medical Mile, or Health Hill is an important part to the growth of Grand Rapids. It is one of the nations most ambitious, cutting edge health care education and research centers. Medical Mile is home to Spectrum Health, the Lemmon-Holton Cancer Pavilion, Helen Devos’ Children’s Hospital, The Van Andel Institute and the Seccia Center.
