East Grand Rapids – Home, Condos and Community Information
East Grand Rapids is one of West Michigan’s most desirable communities to live and is 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids. In 2007, CNN Money Magazine ranked East Grand Rapids as one of the Top 100 Cities to live in the Nation. That is a nice feather in the cap to have but it’s no surprise to us as there many thing for everyone to enjoy. East Grand Rapids is known for its award winning school system and a diverse, affluent community. The streets are well cared for with mature trees and it is a pleasure to walk around and look at some of the gorgeous homes and estates. East Grand Rapids Schools is one of the best school systems in the area with extensive, championship calibre, athletic programs.
EGR was first settled in the early 1830’s by the Reed Family out of New York. The Village of East Grand Rapids was established in 1891 and when the population exceeded 1000 people, East Grand Rapids was officially incorporated as a city.
Attractions and Parks
One of the areas popular destinations is Gaslight Village. This pretty lakeside community is home to many fine restaurants, coffee shops and trendy boutiques. Summertime is a good time to hang out with friends or take a short walk down to John Collins Park and Reeds Lake. John Collins Park is situated along the shoreline of Reeds Lake. There is a boat launch for access to the Lake and an extensive picnic area. This is a popular spot during the summer and a nice day trip for the family. At one end of the 2.7 acre park is Rose’s, which offers Mediteranian style cuisine and an outdoor terrace along the lake during the summer.
Also located on Reeds Lake is the Waterfront/Gillmore Nature Area. Reeds Lake trail meanders through this lovely woodlands and wetlands area and is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon fishing, birdwatching or just taking a leisurely stroll.
Boating
The Grand Rapids Yacht Club was established in 1931 on the south shore of Reeds Lake from the lawn of its first Commodore. At its present site since 1941, GRYC provides sailing instruction to children and adults in one-design sailboats which are fun and easy to learn.
Dedicated to the instruction and enjoyment of sailboat racing, racing league classes accomodate single person sailing (MC, Interclub Dinghy, Butterfly and Laser) and couples, parent/child teams using Rebel, MC and Snipe.
