The Mom Cave

A Busy Mom Deserves Some Quality “Me Time”

Grand Rapids Real Estate Well I am sure we have all heard about the Man Cave. For those of us fortunate enough to have access to one, it’s a beautiful thing. And it doesn’t even have to be ours, as long as you know someone that has one, that is almost as good. A friend of mine is fortunate enough to be married to a lovely wife that allows him this little necessity luxury. We’re talking full size fridge stocked with a variety of survival beverages, all sorts of sports collectibles, neon lights, poker/pool table, cigar humidors and a fan to disperse the large volume of smoke during a card game. Tucked away in the basement with access to the garage, it couldn’t be a more suitable location. Feel free to hang something that has been shot or hooked on the wall.

But what about the ladies? I do believe Moms deserve a space that is appropriately decorated where they can enjoy some quality “me time”… and I don’t mean with feathers, lace and potpourri. Ok maybe the potpourri.

First you will need to find a suitable space in your home; it doesn’t have to be large but it must have the capacity to be private. Some options to consider would be a guest bedroom if you have one. Perhaps there is some space in the basement or in one of the kid’s bedrooms. Some Grand Rapids Home styles that would work have an upstairs dormer or attic space that can be made into a perfect Mom Cave. It really doesn’t matter where as long as it features one key component. Privacy.

Colors

Once you have found your space, you will need to think about decorating. Paint is the easiest route to take and the right colors can lend you that ambiance that you are looking for. It doesn’t have to be a complicated mural, a simple color is the way to go. PickingGrand Rapids Staging the right ones will depend on your personal goal for your cave so give some thought to what you would like. A calming influence, try warm blues and greens. Are you looking to spark your creativity while in your cave, bright neon greens and yellows. Do you want a cozy, quiet spot for reflection, try darker colors like a burgundy. Colors can help you enhance those moods.

Furniture

As far as making your furniture selection, you will want a comfortable chair but also one that supports your back. Lounge chairs are great for this purpose and come in many different tasteful styles and colors. You don’t want too much furniture because after all, this is your space for a little privacy but another option could be a large over-sized, pottery barn style chair. If there is room, perhaps a small comfy love seat for quests. If there isn’t room for a desk, or maybe you didn’t want one, it would be a good idea to purchase either a lap pad that you can rest your lap top on while you relax and remain comfortable. Or you can find a small portable sliding table which can double a a craft desk. When not in use, it can be tucked out of sight.

Lighting

Lighting is important and this is will depend on the type of space you have. If you have natural light, then some well placed lamps or some cool track lighting will work. A nice feature that can really bump up the coolness factor would be a small electric fireplace. These don’t typically give off a ton of heat and can be hung on the wall like a flatscreen. You can’t beat the relaxing atmosphere of flames flickering in the evening. If the space is small, you might want to consider adding some mirrors as they can give the illusion of more space as well as distribute light better.

Personal Touches

The rest of the decorating is really down to personal taste and available space. A bookshelf to keep those books and magazines you have been meaning to read. For example, home and garden, travel magazines, a good book, the newspaper. Maybe a flat screen hanging on the wall, don’t forget your DVR so that you can record your favorite shows and replay them at your leisure. Personal mementos, family photos in  fun colorful frames, a wine cooler to keep that bottle chilled! The most important things to remember are comfort and privacy.
