ArtPrize Top Ten Released

Grand Rapids ArtPrize 2012

"It's Not My Fault" by Andrew Hawkes

Well it’s that time of year again. Summer has left us all too quickly and Autumn is here with West Michigan winters and the dreaded lake effect snow on tap. But one great thing about this time of year in Grand Rapids, is that ArtPrize is here. This year’s ArtPrize marks the 4th annual event. This is a unique event where artists from all over the world enter the competition in the hopes of snagging the very large cash prize and major bragging rights.

This year there are 1517 entries at 161 venues over 3 square miles. The art is spread throughout the city at various locations which can be found here. We have been downtown several times already and there are some very creative pieces entered. The Top Ten vote-getters have already been selected and can be viewed online here. (I never agree with them but what do I know!)

This year’s entries have been quite good overall but the one that literally stood out the most was Mark Carpenter’s and Dan Johnson’s “Lights In The Night”. Thousands of sky lanterns were released from the bridges downtown and soared across the Grand River and over the city. It was quite a sight. If you haven’t been out to see the exhibits yet, you really should get out and go.
